Intermediate Beekeeping
Group Class

Group Class - Schedule Dates Below
Weather permitting of course

Group Class Rate: $75 per student

This Intermediate group class is designed to help next level beekeepers with the information needed to grow and keep their apiaries healthy. The objective is to get the beginning beekeepers that understand the fundamentals to the next level. When second year colonies reach maturity, they can be split into multiple colonies to grow the apiary, or they should be ready add additional boxes to make a honey crop when there is a nectar flow available. Both options are afforded when the colonies are free of mites and the viruses they vector, so knowing when to treat and which treatment method to use is essential.

This class is not for beginners, it is for those that have already had bees for a while and understand the basics of beekeeping.

The classes will generally include, but are not limited to the following topics of demonstrations:
  • Grading Hives
    • Taking inventory of available stock in hives
  • Equalizing Hives
    • Borrowing from one to help another
  • Making Splits
    • Dividing a healthy mature colony into two or more
  • Finding Queens
    • Locating and removing old queens
  • Checking for Varroa
    • Using the Alcohol Wash method
  • Applying Varroa Treatments
    • When and how to apply which treatment
  • Extracting Honey
    • How much to rob and when

Please Note: This is a Hands On Class. We will inspect multiple honey bee hives to check the status and conditions including the amount of brood and food stores as well as the mite counts. We will be working with mature hives that will require some manipulation therefore full protective gear is recommended for the general comfort level of the participants.
